About Training, Behaviour, Raising a Pup
The
Culture Clash - Jean Donaldson
Not a step by step training book, this book is about the relationship between
humans and dogs, and the common misconceptions that often lead to problems. This
book will help you understand how dogs think and learn, giving you the ‘dog
sense’ necessary to raise a well-behaved dog and develop a good relationship
with him.
Dogs
are From Neptune - Jean Donaldson
Don’t
Shoot The Dog (The New Art of Teaching and Training) - Karen Pryor
Not specifically a how-to dog-training book, this book discusses operant
conditioning, the basis behind clicker training, and how it can be successfully
applied to both people and dogs to ‘shape’ the behaviour you desire.
Playtraining
Your Dog - Patricia Gail Burnham
A good book on obedience training focusing on having fun, and training without
force or violence. Covers most of the standard obedience exercises, using the
owner’s Greyhounds as examples (a nice change from many books written by
trainers of ever-obedient Shelties or Goldens!).
Body
Language and Emotions Of Dogs - Myrna Milani
A super book on the body language dogs use and what it means. Many problems
occur when owners simply don’t understand what their dog is trying to tell
them through their behavioural displays and body language.
Using many case histories, this book will teach you how to better
’read’ your dog and respond appropriately.
On
Talking Terms With Dogs: Calming Signals - Turid Ruugas
A wonderful little book about the body language dogs use to communicate with
each other, and with us, particularly the little behaviours that indicate the
dog is stressed or upset, and how to use these signals yourself to communicate
with your dog.
Toolbox
For Remodeling Your Problem Dog - Terry Ryan
A book on solving problems you may be having with your dog, focusing on using
positive methods to solve specific problems and teaching you how to use the same
basic methods to deal with any other problems you might encounter.
The
Dog Who Loved Too Much
(Tales, Treatments, & The Psychology of Dogs) - Dr. Nicholas Dodman
Using case histories this book is about so called ‘problem dogs’, why they
behave the way they do and how to resolve the situations. Even if you aren’t
having any problems with your dog, this book can still be valuable in helping
you better understand your dog’s mind.
Excel-erated
Learning
(Explaining
How Dogs Learn and How Best to Teach Them) - Pamela Reid
What
All Good Dogs Should Know
(The Sensible Way To Train) - Jack Volhard & Melissa Bartlett.
This is a relatively inexpensive paperback book, very clearly written with
amusing cartoons to illustrate many points.
Beardie
Basics and Beyond - Reiseberg and McKinney
This book is not cheap, but is a substantial and informative publication on the
breed. Unfortunately it is currently out of print and very hard to find. A less
expensive, abbreviated version of this book is also available. Geared to the
newcomer and pet owner it contains the same information as the above book, minus
the sections on kennels, breeding, and showing. It is called: Beardie
Basics, Beginner’s Guide to Bearded Collies - Reisberg and McKinney
The
Bearded Collie - Chris Walkowicz
Another good book. Visit Chris Walkowicz's' website at http://home.revealed.net/walkoway
Talking
About Beardies by Suzanne Moorhouse
Another informative book on the breed. Published privately in England it is sold
mainly through breed clubs or individuals.
Another book about Beardies is Bearded Collies by Carol Gold. It is one of a series of breed books published by T.F.H., and typical of such series there is a fair bit of generic dog care information, however it is still nice to have as a good inexpensive reference on the breed, and it has many colour photos of Beardies.
Many of these books can be ordered online from Dogwise Dog Books.
